Don't cross LoC, Russia tells India

E-Mail this report to a friend

For the first time, Voice of Russia, part of Russia's official media, has cautioned that India might lose international support and sympathy on the Kargil issue if its armed forces crossed the Line of Control.

In a broadcast last night, the radio said any widening of the Kargil conflict would pave the way for third party intervention as in the case of Kosovo.

The broadcast was referring to Defence Minister George Fernandes' statement that if Pakistani forces continued with their hostilities along the border, the Indian forces would teach them a lesson by crossing the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

Such a military measure would create a new situation, the radio said.

Till now, Russia had been lashing out at Islamabad for sending mercenaries and regular troops to Kargil.

The radio also reminded both New Delhi and Islamabad of appeals by Russia to prevent any escalation of the conflict and adopt measures to normalise the situation in Kargil. But it favoured throwing out of 'Islamic fundamentalists and extremists' from the Indian soil.
