Mehboob Khan in Jammu

The Indian Army today foiled a major infiltration bid from across the border into Naushera sector of Rajouri district, killing four Pakistani soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer, and two terrorists on the Line of Control.

A defence spokesman said a group of 50 terrorists and Pakistani soldiers tried to enter India under cover of heavy firing.

"Our troops sighted the group and opened fire on them early this morning. A Pakistani JCO and two militants were shot dead, while another Pakistani JCO was critically wounded," the spokesman said.

The other would-be infiltrators retreated.

JCO Mohammad Farid Khan was killed and Subedar Mohammad Khan was wounded. Both belonged to the 658 Mujahid 'D' Battalion.

The terrorists killed were identified as Mohammad Yunus and Mohammad Aziz Bhat.

This was the second major infiltration bid in the sector that the army has foiled since the Kargil crisis began. A Pakistani soldier was earlier shot dead in the same sector.

Two Pakistani soldiers were also killed in the Jourian sector.
