Customs promises to make 'friendship' bus smuggling-proof

Amritsar Customs Commissioner D S Sra has ruled out the possibility of the New Delhi-Lahore bus being used for smuggling narcotics or arms.

He said this while talking to reporters on the Wagha border after the seizure of 21.54 kg of heroin from a dry fruit cargo from Afghanistan on Friday evening.

Detailing the likely arrangements to be made by his department to prevent smuggling, he said additional staff would be deployed on the days the bus would pass through the check-post. The customs staff would check the baggage and the bus, he added.

Sra said the exercise would take at least 45 minutes. He would take the help of mechanics and drivers in the department for this purpose.

Moreover, the buses of India and Pakistan on this route would be in the custody of the customs once the passengers alight at Delhi, he said.
