Irate mob injures 11 policemen

Eleven police personnel, including a deputy superintendent, were injured when they were attacked by an irate mob at Dewancheruvu village, near Rajahmundry, in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district.

The incident occurred on Friday evening when a police party, headed by DSP J Prabhakara Rao, went to the village to disperse a 1,000-strong mob led by the Dewancheruvu Sarpanch Akkireddi Mahesh. The mob was staging a road roko agitation demanding the release of six people arrested for organising a cockfight on the Makara Sankranti day.

The mob attacked the police with stones and sticks. The DSP suffered head injuries. A sub-inspector and nine constables were also injured.
