New navigation system commissioned at Delhi airport

E-Mail this report to a friend

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport took a monumental technological leap on Thursday with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art air space management system.

Set up by the Airports Authority of India in conjunction with the Raytheon company, the system was inaugurated by Home Minister L K Advani.

Civil Aviation Minister Ananth Kumar, Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism Minister Madan Lal Khurana and Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president K L Sharma were present on the occasion.

The new system, which comes 26 months after the Charki-Dadri mid-air collision in which 349 people were killed drawing attention to the inadequacies of the airport, includes enroute, terminal area, and airport surface detection radars, digital display systems, ground-to-air communications systems and new navigational aids.

The home minister, after commissioning the system, said modern equipment was not good enough if the men behind it were not efficient.

Advani said the BJP-led government at the Centre had come in for a lot of criticism but this did not mean that development would be discontinued. He said development work was continuing in Gujarat despite criticism by the media and political opponents.
