The hijackers' bid to garner support for their cause has suffered a setback, with the supreme leader of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Mulla Mohammed Omar, categorically warning the hijackers of the Indian Airlines flight to either surrender unconditionally or leave Afghanistan.

The Taliban leader is reported to have made known his stand to the hijackers, although the latter's response is still not known. However, there have been reports that they have rejected the Taliban's request to surrender.
