Gamang waits for Sonia's signal

Orissa Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang met Congress president Sonia Gandhi last night amid indications from senior party leaders that he may be on his way out. A decision to end the leadership crisis in the state is expected within the next 24 hours.

It was not immediately known as to what transpired at the meeting.

All India Congress Committee observers Madhavrao Scindia and Vayalar Ravi, who returned from Bhubaneswar last night, also met the party president and apprised her of the situation in the cyclone-ravaged state.

The observers ascertained the views of party MLAs in Bhubaneswar. Though they later told Gamang that a majority of MLAs would like him to step down, the chief minister said he would not resign unless asked to do so by Sonia Gandhi.

Gamang is now camping in Delhi waiting for a word from the party high command.
