E-Mail this report to a friend

One person was killed and two were injured in unprovoked artillery and mortar shelling by Pakistani troops in the Teetwal, Gurez and Uri sectors of Jammu and Kashmir last evening.

Official sources said Pakistani troops shelled Indian positions targeting civilian and military installations in the Teetwal sector last evening.

Three persons, Abdul Rashid, Bashir Ahmed and Mohammad Yousuf, were injured as some shells fell in the residential areas. Abdul Rashid died on the way to a hospital.

The sources said Pak troops also fired artillery and mortar shells from across the border in the Gurez and Uri sectors last evening. Some shells exploded in mid air while others fell in the open fields without causing any damage.

Indian troops who were celebrating Independence Day retaliated and silenced Pak guns. Casualties or damage suffered by Pakistan was not immediately known.

Pakistani troops have been firing intermittently from across the border after the Kargil crisis.
