Temperature soars, Madras swelters

Madras had no respite from heat wave conditions Thursday, with Nungambakkam in the heart of the city soaring to 41.6 degrees Celsius.

The temperature in the suburban Meenambakkam recorded 42.5 degree Celsius, the highest so far this year.

Strong westerly winds were the reason for the sudden surge during the last two days. The last time the city witnessed such heat condition was in 1991 April.

Severe heat wave conditions also prevailed in Assam, Manipur, north Tamil Nadu coast and in parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Heat wave conditions prevailed in Jammu and Kashmir and in the remaining parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and in parts of east Madhya Pradesh.

Day temperatures were appreciably above normal in Orissa, Bihar, hills of west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, south Tamil Nadu and in the remaining parts of east Madhya Pradesh and in parts of the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra and of Vidarbha.

They were above normal in parts of east Uttar Pradesh and of north Tamil Nadu.

They were appreciably below normal in parts of central Maharashtra, and were below normal in parts of west Rajasthan and Gujarat region.

They were normal over the rest of the country outside Arunchal Pradesh and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from where the data were sparse.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, at many places in Assam and Meghalaya, at a few places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and at isolated places in Kerala.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.

Rain or snow is likely at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rain or thundershowers are likely at many places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, at a few places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunchal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and at isolated places in south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
