More lawyers to probe Air India bombing

A federal prosecution team that is putting together the report on the 14-year-old investigation of the bombing of an Air India aircraft, wants more than double the number of prosecutors working on the case.

A posting has been put up at crown counsel offices to find eight prosecutors to add to the six already on the case.

Geoffrey Gaul, spokesperson for the Criminal Justice branch of the attorney general's ministry, confirmed that a posting is now up across the province advertising the positions.

"It is just that there is work that needs to be done and this will speed up the process," he said. "We wish to speed up the process."

Gaul said it is hoped that the eight will be working out of the Air India-Narita charge approval office in Vancouver within weeks.

"There is no set designated time, but it would be preferred if they being around the beginning of May," he said.

Gaul said he still can't say how long it could be before charges are laid in the June 1985 bombing of the Air India aircraft, which killed all 329 people aboard, 280 of them Canadians.
