BJP hopeful of Jaya's return, says K L Sharma

Exhibiting a brave face to the impending withdrawal of the support by the AIADMK to the year-long Vajpayee government, the Bharatiya Janata Party today maintained that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would sail through the crisis and complete his full term.

The prime minister, who had received the resignations of two AIADMK ministers -- Thambi Durai and R Janardhanam -- has not yet forwarded the same to President K R Narayanan for acceptance, leaving scope for the AIADMK to rethink its decision.

The BJP did not want to precipitate the situation and was still hopeful AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha remained in the coalition, party spokesman Krishan Lal Sharma said. He however ruled out any possibility of reconciliation between the BJP and the AIADMK.

Sharma asserted that as of now there was no alternative to the BJP-led coalition and all the opposition parties were in a state of utter confusion. These parties have no clarity and their exercise would prove to be futile.

The prime minister, he said, had already stated that he was ready for a trial of strength if it was warranted, he said. The BJP felt that a no-confidence motion, if brought in by any party, would prove to be a boon for the Vajpayee government as the Bihar issue in which the government won the confidence vote by 29 votes in the Lok Sabha.
