Marxists to back Congress in Parliament

E-Mail this report to a friend

West Bengal Chief Minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) politician Jyoti Basu today said his party would support the Congress if a confidence vote takes place in Parliament under the President's order.

"We shall vote for the Congress," he said, adding, "All the Left parties are with us."

"I don't know what will happen when Parliament reopens on April 15, but the BJP-led coalition government must go. The sooner it goes, the better it is for the country. But unfortunately it has lasted 13 months," Basu said.

"I think the BJP is also trying to buy MPs as it is a very corrupt party. I don't know if it will succeed," Basu said.

"We have made it absolutely clear from the outset that as far as our party is concerned we will support the Congress on an issue-to-issue basis. Otherwise we do not have the numbers and elections will take place under the governance of the BJP, which we don't want," Basu said, regretting that the United Front is now too weak to stake a claim.
