Yeltsin to visit India in December, pushing CTBT tops agenda

Russian President Boris Yeltsin hopes he will be able to persuade India to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty during his visit to India in December, informed sources indicated in Moscow today. This will be his second official visit to the country.

In a curtain-raiser to the visit, broadcast on the Voice of Russia, the sources said the Russian president would sign many important agreements with New Delhi, chief among them being an increase in the volume of Indo-Russian trade.

Russia hopes the current trade turnover of two billion dollars between India and Russia will be tripled by the year 2010. The radio also stressed that Russia was determined to carry out its undertaking to build the Koodankulam nuclear power plant in India notwithstanding the West's ire.

The sources expressed the hope that the Russian president's visit would pave the way for further improvement in bilateral relations between the two countries.
