A law student has been awarded the first and second ranks, besides a gold medal, by the Kuvempu university in Karnataka!

Raghuvendra Ullar of the M K Sreenivasa Setty Law college in Chiknagalur, who topped the merit list of the final LLB degree course for 1996-97, was ranked second by the university.

When the student questioned this, the 'varsity officials replied that it was a policy decision. He brought the issue to the notice of the registrar (evaluation), who replied that the ranks were based on marks obtained in the final year, subject to the condition that the candidate should have passed the exams in the previous two years in the first attempt.

However, Ullar argued that any policy decision should come into effect prospectively, and not retrospectively, from the year 1994-95.

The rattled authorities settled the matter by awarding the gold medal to Ullar and saying he stood first in the final exam!
