After Jaswant Singh, US will talk to Pak leadership

The Clinton administration proposes to invite soon the Pakistani leadership for a similar kind of dialogue it had with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's special emissary Jaswant Singh in Washington last week.

When asked to comment on his meeting with the deputy chairman of India's Planning Commission, Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Tallott yesterday said, ''I unquestionably came away from the discussion with even better understanding of the Government of India's position'' on the nuclear issue.

''We already had a good understanding because US Ambassador Celeste had returned to New Delhi and we have been in close touch with him and he was has been talking to people and the Indian leadership,'' Talbott added.

He said, ''I believe that Jaswant Singh gave us a fair hearing on the views that we put forward to him forcefully and clearly as we could,'' he said, adding this was ''an ongoing process and an ongoing dialogue.''
