All but four fundamental rights restored in Pakistan

A presidential order on Monday night restored all but four of the fundamental rights suspended in Pakistan following imposition of Emergency on May 28.

The amendment to the Emergency provisions came after a Supreme Court bench yesterday observed that the imposition of Emergency and suspension of fundamental rights are two separate things to be examined by the court.

The bench was hearing a bunch of petitions against the Emergency.

President Rafiq Tarar had imposed the Emergency, citing ''threat of external aggression'', on the day Pakistan conducted its multiple nuclear tests.

Attorney General Mohammed Farooq reiterated the official Pakistani position that a state of Emergency was imposed as India and Israel were planning a joint attack on its nuclear installations.

He has maintained in earlier depositions before the court that the President's powers to impose a state of Emergency cannot be challenged in court.
