There was not much of a brief. I learnt that the lead stars were Delhi college boys only after I read the script. Rakeysh wanted them to be very natural and realistic. That's all he told me. He gave me a free hand.

Aamir's look came out of the fact that he is slightly older than the other boys. He has nothing to prove to the other boys; he is the cool one. He is a rebel, a biker, a little messy. He is not particularly interested in clothing. I wanted the leather jacket that Aamir wore to seem as if he had had it for at least five years.

His character is the type who does not go out shopping or look at any fashion magazine. If he is comfortable in a pair of jeans, he will not buy another till this one falls off his body. DJ is a free spirit. He has a paternal feel to his character, because he takes care of the boys. His look is a little sloppy and not refined. A hardcore Punjabi boy, residing in Delhi.

I had to sit with the actors when I was designing their costumes, and I prefer it that way. If the actor is not wearing the clothes in the correct way, it starts looking like a costume rather than clothing. I feel that actors should wear clothes rather than clothes wearing the actor.

I got a lot of inputs from Aamir, especially during fittings. When you start putting him in a kind of clothing, he will speak to you about it.

Dressing Aamir is very easy. It is not a high drama situation for me. He understands what I am doing and I understand what he wants. He will go with ideas even if he feels sometimes that it is not okay. If you explain why you want him to wear a particular dress, he will go for it.
