Jackie Shroff

I met him when I had gone for the role of Gautam Sareen in Vishwavidhaata opposite Sanjay Dutt as a bad guy. He looked at me and said, 'Wait, don't do this role. I'll give you something nicer.' I thought it was one of those evasive answers and left. A year later, he called me for Hero.

We got along well. I think maybe he was fed up of stars and stuff at the time. He related to me. He knew there was a student in front of him who was willing to listen to what he said.

We are both Aquarians. His family and mine got along well. We formed a bond. Subhash Ghai is like my brother. If I have any problem, I know where to turn. He performed the kanyadaan for [wife] Ayesha. She has no men in the family, so he did the job of giving the bride away in marriage. He told me once to respect seniors, to do my job and not be part of gossip.

I remember him introducing Madhuri Dixit and telling Yash Chopra, Yash Johar, Ramesh Sippy, Mammohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, 'Aap ise lo na lo, par aap ki taraf se ek ek page mujhe chahiye [Whether you cast her or not,I want full-page coverage from each of you on her].' And there were pages from all these guys on Madhuri in Screen.

Outside, he is flamboyant, a showman and all that. But basically, he is family-oriented, very cultured, very much into music and a gentle soul.

Unfortunately after his child was born and after his company went public, he hardly has time to be with friends. We keep SMS-ing each other though.

His opinion matters a lot to me. I don't ask him anything, but if I do, he definitely would give me the best.

I have been in his films more than other actors and have acted in all but Taal and Pardes. I notice he doesn't like to repeat actors. He makes you give your best. He is on high alert all the time. He is one of the best.
