Karz (1980)
Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal, Pran, Durga Khote, Premnath, Jalal Agha, Raj Kiran
Karz, the first film under the Mukta Arts banner, was also one of Ghai's biggest hits. It established him in the industry.
Karz had a novel story -- a man (Raj Kiran) is murdered by his new-wedded bride (Simi Garewal). He is born again (Rishi Kapoor) and takes revenge on the woman who killed him.
This concept of rebirth and revenge was later exploited in quite a few films, one of the most recent being Rakesh Roshan's Karan Arjun (Rakhee, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan).
The song Om shanti om, in which Rishi Kapoor dances on a giant LP, became a rage and continues to be popular even today. Composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal won a Filmfare award for the music of Karz. Simi Garewal won the best supporting actress award.
