The year 1990 marked a new chapter in Hema's life. From being a screen goddess, she moved on to direct her maiden television series, Nupur.

The impressive Nupur was followed by an even more lavish directorial debut on the big screen. Dil Aashna Hai, released in 1992, featured Jeetendra, Mithun Chakraborty, Dimple Kapadia, Amrita Singh, Sonu Walia, Shah Rukh Khan and the late Divya Bharti.

It crashed. But that didn't deter the determined Libran. She went on to direct cousin Madhoo in the eminently forgettable Mohini.

Around this time, Hema, a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, also started giving stage performances.
