BUSINESS Outsourcing the world In 2003, India emerged as the global destination for business process outsourcing, or BPO. The global BPO industry, currently valued at $142 billion, is estimated to touch $540 billion by 2007 and cross $1.2 trillion by the end of the current decade. A huge chunk of this market is about to be bagged by India. Thousands of talented, English-speaking graduates, a low-wage structure, and a hard-working labour force has taken India to the top position, ahead of competitors China, Russia, the Philippines, Canada, Mexico, and Ireland. India's BPO profile has caused a backlash in the West, with rising opposition to free trade and legislation to ban government outsourcing.
