PM expresses grief over Ambani's death

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday expressed deep shock and grief over the death of Reliance Industries chairman Dhirubhai Ambani.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, he said, "The country has lost an iconic proof of what an ordinary Indian fired by the spirit of enterprise and driven by determination can achieve in his own lifetime."

He said, "I am filled with profound grief at the demise of Dhirubhai Ambani in Mumbai last night [Saturday]."

The prime minister gave Ambani credit for envisioning the creation of world-class capacities in core areas of the nation's infrastructure in the private sector and translating that vision into a reality in record time.

Not only did he build a large and diversified business conglomerate, which greatly strengthened India's industrial base, but also inspired many first-generation entrepreneurs with his success, Vajpayee said.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Vijay Goel will place a wreath on the body of the deceased industrialist on behalf of Vajpayee later on Sunday.
