Industry leaders mourn Ambani's death

Industry and business leaders on Sunday condoled the death of Reliance group Chairman Dhirubhai Ambani who passed away on Saturday night at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

Ambani, 69, passed away at 2350 hrs following 12 days of hospitalisation after a brain stroke.

All India Association of Industries President Vijay Kalantri said that the loss of Ambani will always be felt by the business community. ''He was a visionary. He was a true business leader and his success story is a great example,'' he said.

Former Indian Merchant President Arvind Jolly described Ambani as a 'great legend' and said that his example is a role model for many to follow.

Leading exporter and former chairman of Federation of Indian Exports Organisation Ramu Deora described Ambani as a great personality who had set an example before the young entrepreneurs that 'nothing is impossible in the world.'

"Ambani was a big thinker and a man of vision," he said.

Leading stock broker and former vice-president of the Bombay Stock Exchange Deena Mehta said that Dhirubhai was rightly termed as the father of stock market. "Reliance is the first company which had truly made available the prosperity and growth of Indian industry," she said.

Jugal Kishore Mehra, Director (Western Region) Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said that Ambani, who was the idol for Indian industry, was the only person who gave hopes to millions of Indians. The Indian Industry will never forget Ambani's contribution, he said.

Manoj Vaish, deputy executive director of the BSE, said that Ambani was responsible for spreading the equity cult among the small investors in India. "Large credit goes to the Indian industrial icon for growth and development of capital market," he said.

According to Vaish, Ambani had set up new standards in financial market. He will be missed by the capital market, he added.

Recalling his long-time association with Ambani, former BSE President Bhagirath Merchant described the RIL chairman as an 'ordinary person with beautiful heart.'

"He was my godfather who directed me in my life whenever I faced difficulties," Merchant said.

Maharashtra Chambers of Commerce and Industry President Amilal Para described Dhirubhai as a great patriotic industrialist who had proved the whole world that Indian industry can not only compete with them but can also go ahead of them.

The nation as whole and industry in the state has suffered a great loss following his demise, he remarked.

Ashok Soota, President, CII said with the passing away of Dhirubhai Ambani, India has lost a visionary, inspiring and motivating leader, who came from an ordinary background but achieved extraordinary things as the founder and chairman of the Reliance group. This shows that India, too, like the USA is a country where enormous business success can be built through enterprise.

The CII president added that for corporate India, Ambani signified 'thinking big,' reaching world scale and class industry, achieving global competitiveness, involving millions of ordinary citizens in the primary market and sharing the success of the corporation with the stakeholders. Indian industry has lost a truly global leader, he said.

On behalf of CII, Soota conveyed deepest condolences to Kolilaben Ambani, Mukesh and Anil and all members of the family who have lost an outstanding head and leader.
