WTO approves Taiwan's entry after China

The World Trade Organisation approved Taiwan's entry on Sunday, one day after welcoming China into the global trade club.

Beijing has insisted Taiwan could enter only after China since it considers the island part of its sovereign territory.

Taiwan's accession will increase trade and economic ties with rival China, but analysts say a thaw in political relations is unlikely. Ties have been strained since Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party took office last year.

Taiwan will enter the WTO as the "separate customs territory" of Taiwan and its offshore islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu to avoid the sensitive political issue.
