Maruti workers to hold protest march on Tuesday

Nearly 4,700 employees of Maruti Udyog Limited, who have been boycotting work for four days now, will hold a protest march in New Delhi demanding better working atmosphere and speedy implementation of revised incentive and pension schemes.

The employees, along with their family members and members of central trade unions, will march from Rajghat to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Maruti Udyog Employees Union secretary general Mathew Abraham said.

Meanwhile, the boycott entered its fourth day on Monday, hitting supplies and hiking the waiting list on most of its models. The company has been able to produce only 300 cars as against an average production of 1200-1500 cars per day.

Abraham, in a statement, said the incentive scheme proposed by the union would put an additional burden of only Rs 58.3 million per annum and not Rs 510 million as stated by the management.

''Our demand is only for an increase of Rs 1,219 per month per employee for the base year 1998-99.If our demand is entirely conceded by the management, the additional payment will only be Rs 58.35 million per year and not Rs 510 million as stated by the management,'' he said.

Abraham said, "Since payment of incentive is linked to productivity and promotion due to higher efficiency of workmen, if the demand for our product is less, then the company does not have to make any payment as per our demand.''

The union also called for immediate implementation of a revised pension scheme.
