FIIs active at infotech, pharma counters; buoyant trend helps Sensex surge past 3000 points

The Bombay Stock Exchange witnessed a buoyant trend with the BSE Sensex registering a whopping gain of 153 points during the week ended December 11 on heavy buying spree by foreign institutional investors in fundamentally strong counters throughout the week.

BSE Sensitive Index The 30-scrip BSE Sensex surpassed the psychological barrier of 3000 points and gained by 152.72 points to 3002.54 points as against the previous week's close of 2849.82 points. The broad-based BSE-100 index rose smartly by 61.19 points to 1327.68 points from the last week's close of 1266.49 points.

The Sensex has gained by about 219 points during last two consecutive weeks.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices were advanced by 12.79 and 4.87 points to 306.89 and 119.97 points as against the previous week's close of 294.10 and 115.10 points respectively.

The FIIs have made considerable purchases in pharma and software counters. The Hindustan Lever scrip too registered sharp gain during the week. The prominent scrips which suffered moderate setbacks were automobile giant Bajaj Auto and Zee Telefilms.

The market opened with a bullish phase and continued the upward march throughout the week.

Sun Pharma and Pentafour Software scrips came under pressure on Thursday following the report of raids on BSE brokers' offices in connection with some suspicious transactions in the scrips.

Pentafour scrip recovered towards the end of the week and registered a gain of Rs 7.25 to Rs 495.50 from the last week's close, while the Sun Pharma scrip fell by Rs 18.65 to Rs 282.60.

Among the gainers, ACC was up by Rs 27.50 to Rs 865, BHEL Rs 11 to Rs 249.70, Cadbury Rs 44.75 to Rs 443.25, Castrol Rs 47.25 to Rs 682.75, Colgate Rs 17.30 to Rs 190.10, Dr Reddy's Rs 34 to Rs 458.25, Glaxo Rs 51.75 to Rs 631.50, Grasim Rs 25.80 to Rs 169.90, Hindustan Lever zoomed by Rs 151.50 to Rs 1743.25, Hindalco Rs 24 to Rs 529, Infosys Tech shot up by Rs 178.75 to Rs 2611, Mahindra and Mahindra Rs 7 to Rs 156.30, NIIT Rs 74 to Rs 1474, Novartis added Rs 100.25 to Rs 849.75, Ranbaxy Rs 3.10 to Rs 265.10, Rhone Poul Rs 3.50 to Rs 752.75, Satyam Computers Rs 38.75 to Rs 547.25, SBI Rs 4.40 to Rs 158, Telco Rs 20.80 to Rs 142.80. Zee Telefilms lost by Rs 40.75 to Rs 553.

Total turnover on the BSE registered an increase of Rs 9.06 billion to Rs 55.06 billion as against the last week's turnover of Rs 46 billion.

The National Stock Exchange also observed bullish trend during the week. The FIIs have actively participated in the trading with increased buying support in the index-based scrips as well as select equities.

NSE-50 Index Reflecting the firm trend, the S&P CNX Index gained sharply by 41.65 points to 870 points from the last week's close of 828.35 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior advanced by 42.35 points to 1437.65 points as against previous week's close of 1395.30 points. The CNX Defty closed higher by 32.70 points to 707.25 points from the previous week's close of 674.55 points.

The CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 rose by 22.26 and 12.05 points to 589.99 and 521.78 points as against the previous week's close of 567.73 and 509.73 points respectively.

Total turnover on the NSE also improved moderately to by Rs 8.58 billion to Rs 66.03 billion from the last week's turnover of Rs 57.45 billion.
