S
uneet Varma can't be more excited by the success of his line. He says he was supposed to be in China even as he had a showing on the second day of the Lakme India Fashion Week 2005.

"I didn't realise my show would be on the second day. I was in Hong Kong last week. I just tied up with a buyer there. I was supposed to be in China now for a fashion fair."

Earlier, Suneet had signed on for a fashion week and then pulled out. The next year, he put up just a stall.

He says he spent that time talking to customers. "'What does s/he wants? Dressy? Inexpensive? Embellishments? Expensive and cheap?' That was my main focus then."

The fashion week now means a chance to reach out to India thanks largely to the success of his prêt line, Le Spice, which retails at about 35 outlets all over the country.

He says India is an exciting market. Indian fashion is ready to move on, ready to get into the ready-to-wear segment.

"Earlier, it was tough to make the Indians realise that ready-to-wear did not mean 'export rejects for the domestic market!'

"Today, an average Indian girl would not hesitate to buy a prêt chiffon dress with a gold belt for Rs 3,200. One of my bags that I recently launched would cost that much. So I think my collection this year is completely value for money."

Le Spice is priced between Rs 800 and Rs 2,500.

Suneet VarmaSuneet's tips to make you feel good this summer:

1. Wear anything that makes you feel sexy. It could be a short printed chiffon dress or a skirt.

Don't go in for embellishments. Keep it light.

2. Wear anything that makes you feel cheerful.

Basically, go in for colour. Indians tend to gravitate towards colour. And that's good. They must use more colour.

3. Anything that you can do to upgrade your wardrobe easily.

You could buy four shirts a year worth Rs 1,800 each and then mix and match them -- it adds spice to your wardrobe.

Be willing to experiment!
