And the award went to…

Awards have always been the mainstay in Bollywood. This year was no different. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas ruled the roost at most award ceremonies, including the Filmfare Awards, Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards, and the India International Film Awards.

The chosen ones: Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Best Actor, Actress, and Director respectively.

Devdas, however failed to make it to an Oscar Foreign Film nomination. Last year, director Ashutosh Gowariker and actor-producer Aamir Khan's Lagaan bolstered India at the Oscars.

Later the year, Ajay Devgan and Konkona Sen Sharma won the National Film Award for their performances in The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and Mr & Mrs Iyer respectively.

The awards came with their fair share of trouble as well. Last year, Raveena Tandon, who won the Best Actress for her role in Daman, was alleged to have campaigned for the award because her uncle Macmohan was a jury member. Then jury member Pradeep Kishen had resigned from the committee saying the awards were predetermined. Kishen later apologised to Tandon unconditionally on television.

This year, Adoor Gopalakrishnan questioned the conduct of the awards committee, saying it was 'improper and immoral' for Prakash Jha to head the jury, since Ajay Devgan was acting in Jha's Gangaajal at the time as well.

Internationally, Britain-based director Asif Kapadia won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for his film The Warrior.
