Aarti Chhabria
All eyes on Aarti
Mad about movies and Awara Paagal Deewana

Priya Masih

Cool, bubbly and full of energy are some adjectives that strike you when you meet Aarti Chhabria.

The former Miss India Worldwide (2000), is raring to make her mark on celluloid. After her debut opposite Nakul Kapoor in Tumse Achcha Kaun Hai, also starring Mohabbatein girl Kim Sharma, Chhabria has a couple of meaty offers on hand.

An interesting one for her being Raja Bhaiyya, opposite Govinda.

Perhaps the film Chhabria is most looking forward to is Awaara Pagal Deewana that opens June 21. She stars opposite Akshay Kumar in this "wacko multi starrer comedy thriller". The cast also includes Aftab Shivdasani, Preeti Jhangiani, Sunil Shetty and Amrita Arora. Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the film is produced by Feroz Nadiadwala.

Chhabria says, about the film, "I went through an audition to get this film. My character Tina, is secretary to Aftab, a dentist. Tina is also don Akshay Kumar's lady love. She is this loud, bindaas NRI who has a tapori accent."

"Working for Awaara Pagal Deewana," she adds, "was great experience. Everyone had a blast. I got along fabulously with all the girls; I just never felt like a newcomer. I was a little nervous at the beginning. But Akshay being the comedian that he is, made me feel completely at home.

The actress has already moved on from her unsuccessful debut, Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai. "I will not let the fate of Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai affect me. It was my first film, so it was obviously close to my heart. But I have moved on. Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai is my past."

Aarti Chhabria and Nakul Kapoor in Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai "Once my makeup is on and I am in front of the camera, I change personality. Suddenly I am so professional that I surprise myself," says Aarti, who began as a model (Krack cream, Amul, Freshna), before moving on to music videos (Nasha hi nasha hai for Sukhwinder Singh), and films (she also had a bit role in Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja).

About her latest project, Kannada film Pritisonaba, Aarti says, "The male lead is Ishwar, director Ravichandran's brother, who debuts in the film. People in the South are really organised. Initially, I did have problems with the dialect, but as the shoot progressed, I learnt."

Aarti has no qualms about hailing from a non-filmi background. No godfather, no problem. "I was born to act. No one can deny me that. Movies are fun. You get to live so many different characters, you work with good-looking men, you travel to the best places. And you get paid too!" she guffaws.

"I am a big fan of Abhishek Bachhan. He is a good actor; I hope he gets the right break. I would love to play the role of Urmila in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. Five years hence I would like to see myself as an established actress," she says.
