Tax exemption for second Hrithik film
The Maharashtra government has granted entertainment tax exemption for producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir.
The exemption, which spans a year, came to effect on November 25.
Usually, distributors greet such tax exemptions with joy.
But that does not seem to be the case with Mission Kashmir.
The reason is simple. The grant came a bit too late. Normally, tax exemptions are most beneficial for the film when they are implemented within the third week of its run.
In this case, the exemption came in the fifth week. By this time, the number of prints being screened is grossly reduced. Thus, because the film has already been well-exploited everywhere, the tax exemption will not help in a big way.
Incidentally, this is the second consecutive Hrithik starrer to have earned a tax exemption.
His second release, Fiza, was also given tax-free status a while ago. A lucky break, considering that both Fiza and Mission Kashmir are not doing that well at the box office.
His maiden film, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, didn't need that kind of crutch. It looks likely to be the year 2000's only superhit film.
