Militants target polling booth
in Pulwama district

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Election 2002

Militants on Sunday night attacked a heavily guarded polling station at Namblabal in Pampore constituency in south Kashmir, which goes to the polls on October 1.

Police said four persons, including a polling officer from Uttar Pradesh, were wounded in the attack. The official has been identified as Fayaz Ali.

Ali and the other injured, including a paramilitary soldier, were admitted to hospitals by the police.

Meanwhile, scores of officials brought from Uttar Pradesh for poll duty held demonstrations outside the office of the Pulwama district magistrate on Sunday afternoon complaining that the district administration was insensitive to their needs.

"We are hungry and no one seems to be bothered. The local poll staff was provided lunch and other facilities while we are dying of hunger," complained Harin Singh.

"They don't allow us to go out on our own and get food. We have been pleading with security personnel to allow us to go to the market and fetch food for ourselves," shouted an agitated Naseem Zaidi.

"They have confined us to designated camps. The Pulwama district magistrate does not bother to arrange food and other essential items for the poll staff. I am repenting my decision to come here," said Masarat Ali.

The agitated poll officials, wearing bullet-proof jackets, finally boarded buses waiting to take them to their respective polling booths under tight security.
