Militants attack school in Udhampur, 2 killed

Election 2002 Stepping up attacks ahead of the second phase of polls in Jammu and Kashmir, militants on Thursday attacked a government school in Udhampur district, killing a teacher and a class X student.

Sources said that the militants entered the school in Jamalsan village near Mahore at around 1045 IST and separated those belonging to the minority community.

They then fired on the people of the minority community, resulting in the death of Deep Chander Badyal [teacher] and P Singh, the sources said.

Others ran away when the firing started.

Police had reached the spot and a hunt was on for the militants.

Militants also hurled a grenade on an army vehicle in Bandipore town resulting in injuries to seven people, including three army soldiers.
