Unified Command discusses measures to thwart militant attacks

A meeting of the Unified Command, attended by Defence Minister George Fernandes, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena and Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, on Thursday reviewed the security situation in the state, official sources said.

The two-hour meeting was held in the backdrop of the killing of state Law Minister Mushtaq Ahmad Lone and 15 others in militancy-related activities on Wednesday.

Besides Fernandes, commander of the 15 corps, director general of the Border Security Force and high-level home ministry officials also attended the meeting, the sources said.

After the meeting, Fernandes, accompanied by special director (IB) and special secretary (home ministry), flew to Surankote in Poonch district where militants killed 12 people on Wednesday.

The defence minister is also scheduled to attend Lone's burial in Kupwara district before flying back to New Delhi, the sources added.
