The Election Commission said on Thursday that arrangements for the conduct of the first phase of the assembly election in Jammu & Kashmir on September 16 were almost complete.

"Deployment of poll personnel for holding free and fair elections in five districts comprising 24 assembly segments under the first phase is almost complete," Deputy Chief Electoral Officer D S Jamwal said in Srinagar.

He said adequate security has been provided for at all polling stations to ensure smooth conduct of the election.

Jamwal said that nearly 50 per cent of the polling staff had been brought from various states of North India, while the rest comprised local government employees. They are all being trained in the use of electronic voting machines.
