Defence Minister George Fernandes
rushes to Srinagar

Union Defence Minister George Fernandes on Wednesday night rushed to Srinagar along with Special Secretary in the Union home ministry (Kashmir affairs) Ashok Bhandari to review security arrangements in view of the killing of a minister.

Fernandes will be briefed about the latest situation in the state following the killing of Jammu and Kashmir law minister Mushtaq Ahmad Lone and his three security guards at an election rally in northern Kupwara district.

In another incident, militants on Wednesday afternoon attacked some security personnel near the bus stand in Surankote in Poonch district even as an election rally was being held nearby.

Militants on Wednesday evening also hurled a grenade at the heavily guarded house of ruling National Conference (NC) candidate from Baramulla in north Kashmir. There were no casualties or injuries.

In Srinagar, militants late on Wednesday attacked a security bunker near Islamia college with a hand grenade killing a BSF soldier.
