Election 2002

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

The army on Thursday gunned down nine Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists gathered in Qasabiru village in Budgam district for a meeting.

"We have confirmed that nine of them were killed," an army officer in New Delhi said. The army lost one soldier in the operation.

He said the terrorists were gunned down at around 0930 IST, adding soldiers of the Rashtriya Rifles and the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles were also involved in the operation.

Asked if the killed terrorists included any senior Hizb members, the officer said, "At such meetings, only senior members are present, but nothing can be said as of now."
