After struggling early on when the Kiwi bowlers bombarded him with bouncers, skipper Sourav Ganguly added 182 runs with his vice-captain. Rahul Dravid and Ganguly scored 118 runs between lunch and tea, eventually breaking G S Ramachand and Vijay Manjrekar's record (127 runs) for the fifth wicket against the Kiwis against New Delhi in 1955-1956.
