The 35-year-old Chennai-born skipper said he had lost faith in the England Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council after his team boycotted its World Cup match in Zimbabwe over security concerns.

Awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list for services to cricket, Hussain revealed he decided to quit in the best interests of the one-day side but was keen to continue as Test captain.

'I want to play 100 Tests and captain England in the Test arena for several years yet,' he said then. 'I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the job.'

But that was not to be as he resigned from the Test captaincy four months later, ending his four-year reign after the drawn first Test against South Africa at Edgbaston.

Hussain continues to play in the side as a specialist middle-order batsman. England won 17 and lost 15 of the 45 Tests in which he captained the side and won 28 and lost 27 limited overs internationals.
