Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist played an entertaining innings of 77 off 81 balls. His knock included nine boundaries and two sixes.
Australia were finally dismissed for 489 runs in their first innings.
At the end of the second day's play, the West Indies were 16 for no loss in their second essay, before bad light stopped play.
