Letter of the Day

October 17, 2001
England's excuse!

It is not surprising at all that England is now reconsidering their cricket tour of India in the wake of all that is happening on our western borders.

After all England needs any excuse to stay away from the subcontinent. The cricket adminstrators talk about the "safety" of English cricket players.

What safety are they talking about? India is hundreds of miles away from the action in Afghanistan, there is absolutely no unrest of any kind related to the events of Sept 11 and furthermore there is no indication of anything untoward happening to jeopardize either the tour or the players involved.

If anything they will be treated like kings everywhere they go, large crowds will watch them play and it will be a huge learning experience for every English cricketeer to see what it takes to play in Indian conditions.

England always had creative excuses for losing in India -- the famous "Mumbai prawns", the "Delhi belly", the "umpires"...whatever. Now it's a new thing -- "lets not play at all, that way we cannot lose" !!

Signed
Harish Balan
