Two arrested for alleged links with match fixers
The Sonipat police said on Saturday that they have arrested two persons having alleged links with match fixers in India and abroad.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Paramjit Singh Ahlawat said that the two arrested, Vijay and Manmohan, had links allegedly
with fixers of cricket matches with the chain running from Delhi to London via Mumbai and Dubai.
Asked if the two arrested were illegal betters or match fixers, Ahlawat said the two were part of the chain involved
in betting which is the first stage of match fixing.
He said the investigations were derailed as the two accused were granted bail by a local court. "We are trying to
identify other links in the chain on the basis of documents recovered from their hideout," Ahlawat added.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested them while the Calcutta test match against Australia was on, but it could not
be conclusively said that the match was fixed. Investigations were on, he said adding that police teams have been sent to
different places for further investigation.
Ahlawat said police would keep a vigil on suspicious persons during the forthcoming international matches,
including one day matches. The use of prepaid telephone cards for making national and international calls by the arrested
also hampered investigations as details of dialled numbers were not available from the telephone exchange, he added
