Equities post sharp gains as bulls go on a rampage; Nifty shoots up 37 points to 1148.10

Share prices rose sharply on renewed buying support by institutional investors as well as bull operators on the National Stock Exchange today.

Mirroring the optimistic note, the S&P CNX Nifty opened higher at 1131.95 points, further firmed up and closed at 1148.10 points, gaining 37.20 points from 1110.90 points of the previous day.

CNX Nifty Junior shot up by 53.15 points to 1974.80 points from 1921.65 points while the S&P CNX Defty moved up by 30.15 points to 930.50 points from 900.35 points.

The S&P CNX 500 index improved by 21.97 points to 778.65 points from 756.68 points and CNX Midcap 200 index appreciated by 16.50 points to 666.84 from 650.34 points of the previous day.

Total turnover in 325,191 trades, involving 92.44 million shares, stood at Rs 25.34 billion while the turnover in debentures was at Rs 2.57 million.

Today, 637 shares gained, 326 declined, 95 remained unchanged while 68 securities hit their price bands.

The top S&P CNX Nifty gainers were: BSES which shot up by 8.01 per cent to Rs 177.90 from Rs 164.70, ACC Rs 1879.20 (1740), Grasim Rs 172.75 (159.95), Hindustan Petroleum Rs 219.25 (203) and Indian Rayon Rs 108.65 (100.60).

The top losers were: Hindalco which slid by 2.15 per cent to Rs 625 from Rs 638.75, Castrol Rs 426.55 (432), East India Hotel Rs 190 (192), Reliance Petroleum Rs 22.75 (22.95) and Infosys Technologies Rs 3205 (3222.05).
