BHEL, MTNL, ITC and Reliance lead rally; FII-buying and FI-selling send Sensex on a roller-coaster ride; up 35 points, 3433.21

Early morning demand at the start of a fresh week further enhanced the equities at the Bombay Stock Exchange, as the Sensex rose by more than 35 points since its last close today.

The foreign institutional investors played a major role in the market since its beginning as they bought shares of BHEL, MTNL, ITC and Reliance, thus keeping the upswing steady. This helped the Sensex to surge past the 3500-mark, boosting the market sentiment in a major way.

The domestic investors, on the other hand, operated mainly on the selling counters by mid-afternoon with the UTI, SBI, LIC and GIC selling heavily, thus weakening the index. The downtrend continued till close.

The Sensex opened at 3502.48 points and immediately zoomed to touch the day's high of 3515.49 points. Negative trend by domestic investors settled it a little lower at 3418.24 points, the day's low before it finally closed at 3433.21, points showing a gain of 35.37 points.

The BSE-100 opened at 1554.50 points to touch a day's high of 1567.57 points and low of 1526.70 points before finally settling down at 1533.53 points showing a net gain of 24.23 points.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices closed at 352.73 points and 138.11 points respectively and showed an individual gain of 5.95 and 2.33 points over their previous close.

The total volume of traded shares was Rs 104.5 million in 256,327 trades. The total turnover was to the tune of Rs 23.79 billion.

ITC, Reliance, SBI and Zee Telefilms were the major gainers in the 'A' group scrips while in other scrips HCL, Infosys Technologies, Tata Infotech, Rolta and Aptech showed gains.

The top 15 scrips for the day were ITC Rs 3.96 billion, Reliance Rs 2 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 1.88 billion, Satyam Computers Rs 1.70 billion, SBI Rs 1.49 billion, Zee Telefilms Rs 1.21 billion, Telco Rs 944 million, MTNL Rs 852.3 million, Castrol India Rs 746.5 million, Tata Tea Rs 644.7 million, Tisco Rs 548.3 million, Glaxo India Rs 378.8 million, ACC Rs 373.2 million, Dr Reddy's Rs 282.9 million and L&T Rs 275.9 million.

In the B1 group, the major gainers included Infosys Technologies Rs 147.5 million, Silverline Industries Rs 100.8 million, Tata Infotech Rs 91.4 million, Rolta Industries Rs 25.8 million, Vikas WSP Rs 13.6 million and Aptech Limited Rs 13.3 million.
