Email this report to a friend

The work on the mega national highway road project, expected to cover 7,000 km, would commence in right earnest before March 31, member-secretary of the Infrastructure Taskforce, N K Singh, said today.

After the taskforce meeting, Singh said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had already flagged off the ambitious project near Bangalore recently.

Work on another 20 points of the proposed highway will start soon. The project being set up at a massive investment of Rs 280 billion is expected to be completed within the next ten years.

The meeting, chaired by taskforce chairman Jaswant Singh, also discussed the progress made so far in the national highway project and different airports projects. It was also attended by surface transport minister, M Thambidurai, and civil aviation minsiter Ananth Kumar.

Singh said the taskforce could not discuss the Kelkar report as he was not present in the meeting. The report had suggested a number of ways to fund such infrastructure projects.

He said that a Cabinet note on the corporatisation of Bombay, Delhi and Bangalore airports had already been prepared by the ministry of civil aviation. The draft rules relating to these airports would also be lined up shortly, he said.
