Subdued buying keeps market steady; Nifty eases a little to 1309.50

Pivotals moved in a narrow range and closed marginally lower in the absence of adequate buying interest from market players at the National Stock Exchange today.

Mirroring the subdued sentiment, the S&P CNX Nifty eased by 5.80 points or 0.3 per cent to 1309.50 points from 1315.30 points of the previous day.

The S&P CNX Defty also edged down by 4.75 points to 1044 points from 1048.75 points.

However, the CNX Nifty Junior rose by 7.65 points to 2362.20 points from 2354.55 points and the S&P CNX 500 inched up by 1.60 points to 924.15 points. CNX Midcap 200 also moved up slightly by 4.75 point to 828 points from 823.25 points.

The NSE witnessed trading worth Rs 20.25 billion, involving 81.02 million shares in 310,027 trades. The debenture turnover stood at Rs 99.23 million.

The top S&P CNX Nifty losers were: BHEL which slid by 4.39 per cent to Rs 270.05 from Rs 282.45, Tata Tea (2.43 per cent to Rs 401.90 from Rs 411.90), BSES (2.42 per cent to Rs 171.20 from 175.45), Telco 2.37 per cent to Rs 259.10 from Rs 265.40) and Hindustan Lever (2.29 per cent to Rs 2623.90 from Rs 2685.50).

The top gainers were: Grasim which rose by 6.44 per cent to Rs 338.85 from Rs 318.35, Indian Rayon (6.19 per cent to Rs 75.50 from Rs 71.10), Tata Chemicals (6.14 per cent to Rs 69.10 from Rs 65.10), Dr Reddy's (4.91 per cent to Rs 1172.30 from Rs 1117.45) and Ranbaxy (3.63 per cent to Rs 1039.50 from 1003.05).
