Sensex zooms up by 120.74 points

The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex skyrocketted by 120 points as pivotals gained smartly following frenzied buying support by foreign funds, domestic institutional investors, and local operators on the opening day of current settlement today.

According to marketmen, foreign institutional investors made heavy purchases in software scrips, while the domestic institutional investors picked up bluechips like MTNL, State Bank of India, BHEL, Reliance, and Tisco.

Software scrips like CMC, DSQ, Satyam Computer faced circuit break on the BSE due to volatile movement, the marketmen said.

Reflecting the bullish trend, the BSE Sensex opened at 3171.25, and breaking the psychological barrier of 3200, it touched the day's high of 3291.18 points. The Sensex fell to touch the day's low of 3171.25 before closing higher at 3289.56 points, showing a net gain of 120.74 points.

The BSE-100 index closed higher by 53.69 points to 1445.51 points against the previous close of 1391.82 points. The BSE-200 and Dollex indices also closed higher by 12.00 and 5.12 points to 329.52 and 128.90 points as against the previous close of 317.52 and 123.78 points respectively.

The total turnover on the BSE stood at Rs 5.9 billion. ITC continued at the top and registered the highest turnover of Rs 1.5 billion, followed by Satyam Computer Rs 669.2 million, Reliance Rs 415.5 million, State Bank of India Rs 365.1 million and Castrol Rs 244.4 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like Zee Telefilm (Rs 162.8 million), ACC (Rs 150.5 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 150.5 million), Telco (Rs 149.9 million), Tata Tea (Rs 97.2 million), BHEL (Rs 88.1 million), L and T (Rs 87.7 million), Pentafour (Rs 64.5 million), MTNL (Rs 64.2 million) and Tisco (Rs 63.8 million).

Cement major ACC registered a handsome gain of Rs 73.25 to Rs 1284.25, Bajaj Auto scrip posted gain of Rs 4 to Rs 577.50, Glaxo closed higher by Rs 20.25 to Rs 362.25, Hind Lever gained by Rs 44.30 to Rs 1503.50. Market leader ITC gained by Rs 19.00 to Rs 230.50, NIIT up by Rs 100.75 to Rs 1412.75, Reliance by Rs 3 to Rs 147, Telco hardened by Rs 3 to Rs 169.20, Tisco by Rs 4.30 to Rs 127.40.
