NSE-50 Index

Nifty stays bullish, gains 23.65 points

The market opened on a buoyant note and prices of pivotals firmed up further on the National Stock Exchange following good buying support from local operators and institutional investors today.

Mirroring the uptrend, the NSE-50 (Nifty) index opened on a firm note at 908.65, touched the day's high of 939.15 points, and registered a smart increase of 23.65 points to close at 932.15 points against the previous ending of 908.50 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index hardened by 18.70 points to 756.45 points against the previous close of 737.75 points while the "Nifty Junior" Midcap index rallied by 46.20 points to close at 1338.65 points against the previous close of 1292.45 points.

The total turnover on the NSE increased to Rs 9.3 billion as against Wednesday's turnover of Rs 8.2 billion while 46.7 million lakh shares changed hands in the number of trades 161,818 today.

Around 741 shares advanced, 199 declined, 70 remained unchanged and 78 securities hit their price bands.

Only ITC witnesed brisk trading with highest turnover of Rs 2.5 billion. The other actively traded securities were Reliance (Rs 726.7 million), State Bank (Rs 715.7 million), Satyam Comp (Rs 537.6 million), Infosys Tech (Rs 418.4 million), Tata Tea (Rs 414.3 million), Telco (Rs 301.3 million), ACC (Rs 298.6 million), Pensfware (Rs 279.2 million), Hind Lever (Rs 250.3 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 220.3 million), Tisco (Rs 214.2 million), L and T (Rs 199 million), Castrol (Rs 198.7 million), Videocon Intl (Rs 119.5 million), SQRD Sfware (Rs 119.5 million), NIIT (Rs 98.4 million), Rel Petro (Rs 84.9 million), BSES (Rs 75.8 million), MTNL (Rs 67.7 million), Wipro (Rs 67.4 million), Sterlite (Rs 65.2 million), BHEL (Rs 64.8 million) Zee Tele (Rs 62.7 million) and Aptech (Rs 60.4 million).

The top nifty gainers were ICICI Rs 77.05 (Rs 70.05), Glaxo Rs 351.00 (Rs 319.15), HDFC Rs 2892.30 (Rs 2655.10), BHEL Rs 232.95 (216.45), MTNL 174.25 (162.70).

Only BPCL witnessed steep fall of 1.78 per cent to Rs 329.05 from Rs 335.00.
