A man fired four shots into the air outside the United Nations building in New York on Thursday before being taken into custody by the security authorities.
Cable News Network reported the man was outside the UN's main building but on UN grounds.
There were no reports of any injuries.
The gunman tossed into air a handful of pamphlets before he was taken into custody. There was no word on what the pamphlets said.
The shooting did not disrupt the functioning of the UN.
UN Deputy Spokeswoman Hua Jiang said that the UN was not evacuated and was functioning normally, except for the closure of one gate where the man was being detained.
A member of UN Director of Communications and Special Projects Shashi Tharoor's office said no order had been given regarding evacuation.
"There was an announcement that it was merely a situation outside the building, that the situation was safe," he said.
A member of India's permanent mission to the UN said they weren't fully aware of what happened, but said no one from India was hurt, as most of the officers were out to lunch, and not near the UN building at the time.
Jiang couldn't provide any details as to the man's identity or how he might have entered the UN grounds.
