Musharraf's double speak unacceptable: Pallone

A senior US politician has pointed out that Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf while cooperating with the US in its fight against terrorism winks at the menace in Kashmir.

"Musharraf has created a double standard where he fights against terrorism globally, but winks at terrorist activities in Kashmir," Frank Pallone, former co-chairman of the India Caucus in Congress, said in a House speech on Thursday.

"There is no accountability for terrorist activities in Pakistan or Kashmir. Musharraf is reversing his crackdown on terrorists, and terrorist groups that formerly existed and are now rejoining other groups under new names," Pallone said.

"President Musharraf is cozying up to the US and its allies under the pretence that he is leading Pakistan in a war against terrorism, while at the same time he is condoning terrorism at home, in Pakistan, as well as in Kashmir," Pallone said.

"This is not only exemplified by the release of those arrested, but also by the continued operation of the religious schools with curricula that encourage violence. This double standard is unacceptable and should no longer be tolerated by the United States."

The New Jersey Democratic Congressman said that the October 1 attack on the Jammu and Kashmir state assembly and the December 13 attack on the Indian Parliament last year, made it clear that Islamic militancy should be suppressed.
