Queen endorses cancer charity's Indian recipes

H S Rao in London

In a 'very unusual' departure from protocol, Queen Elizabeth II has written a foreword to a celebrity cookbook of Indian cuisine with a 'tempting array of recipes', which will raise funds for cancer research.

Favourite recipes of the Raj, written by award-winning Indian chef Tommy Miah, has recipes among others by Cherie Blair, wife of United Kingdom's Prime Minister Tony Blair, former actress and member of parliament Glenda Jackson, and singer Tom Jones.

The book due to be published soon is expected to raise 200,000 pounds for cancer research in the UK.

Cherie Blair's contribution is a vegetarian recipe for Kutchi bhindi (sweet and sour ladies' fingers).

Jackson pitched in with a vegetarian dish saag aloo (spinach and potatoes).

Jones chose a rich prawn curry, made with coconut milk, while former England football team manager Kevin Keegan submitted a recipe for Britain's favourite Indian dish chicken tikka masala.

Novelist Irvine Welsh and comedienne Victoria Wood paid tribute to the vegetarian theme with recipes for saag paneer and vegetable curry, respectively.

Buckingham Palace said it was 'very unusual' for the Queen, the charity's patron, to agree to write a foreword, but she had been persuaded because it was for such a good cause.

She is said to enjoy Indian food.
